Winter by Ali Smith

"A fraught family Christmas in Cornwall is the setting for the second part of Ali Smith's seasonal quartet, a tender tale inspired by Dickens and Shakespeare"
Sophie is not looking forward to Christmas, expecting her sister Iris, her son Art and his girlfriend Charlolte/Lux for the festive season and all that "chaos, lies, power mongering, division ... and self poisoning" Through the days spent together their lives, past family events, the women's protest movement and the immigration problems are exposed. I am always amazed at Ali Smith's economy and beauty of writing, words that leave you unraveling the story long after you finish it and checking facts on the internet. Do not be put off by the first "chapter".
