Will and his mother are in Indonesia on holiday after Will’s dad dies. 

This story begins on Boxing Day 2004.  Will is riding Oona (the elephant) along the beach when strange things happen with the sea, and Oona begins to behave oddly.  A massive tsunami (the dramatic and devastating Boxing Day Tsunami) comes crashing in, and so begins the amazing story of the partnership of a boy and an elephant alone in the jungle. 

Another brilliant example of Michael Morpurgo’s ability to bring historical events to life for children.
